Genre switching
The fundamentals of DJing are universal: match tempo, align phrases, manage frequency, serve the room. What changes between genres is the conventions around each of these. The BPM range, the typical track structure, the mixing windows, the harmonic conventions, the energy profile of a track in context.
Genre-fluent DJs are not doing something different technically. They have learned the conventions of multiple genres well enough that they can apply the same underlying skills in each context. Learning a new genre is largely learning its structural vocabulary: where the intro ends, where the drop lands, what the typical phrase length is, how long transitions are expected to be.
House music
House music is structurally designed for mixing. Most house tracks have extended intros and outros, clear phrase boundaries every 8 or 16 bars, and a kick that runs throughout, making beatmatching reliable. The mixing window is typically generous: you have 32 bars or more to complete a transition.
Key is prominent in house. The bass line, the chord progression, the melodic elements all carry tonal information. Harmonic mixing matters here more than in many other genres. Matching Camelot positions, or moving one step around the wheel, prevents the key clash that sounds obvious in a melodic house mix.
Techno
Techno rewards patience. Transitions in techno are often very long: 32 bars is typical, 64 bars is not unusual. The genre tolerates extended blends because the arrangements are designed for it: long builds, minimal changes, gradual textural shifts rather than dramatic drops.
Energy in techno is cumulative. Individual tracks do not necessarily peak dramatically. The energy comes from the arrangement of tracks over time, from how intensity accumulates across the hour. This means track order and pacing are even more important in techno than in more event-based genres.
Drum and bass
Drum and bass runs at 160 to 180 BPM, which means the beatmatch margin for error is smaller. A one percent pitch error at 170 BPM is more noticeable than the same error at 128 BPM because the beats arrive faster. Precision is more critical than in most other genres.
Transitions in DnB are typically shorter than in house: 4 to 8 bars is common. Cut transitions are acceptable and often preferred. The genre has a more event-based energy pattern, with clear drops and high-impact moments that audiences respond to viscerally. Mixing into the drop rather than through the intro is often the right choice.
Hip-hop
Hip-hop mixes differently from electronic genres because most tracks have vocals throughout, limiting the windows available for smooth transitions. The practical approach: know the instrumental sections of every track in your crate, those are your mixing windows. Most hip-hop tracks have instrumental breaks at the intro, outro, or between verses.
Cut transitions are more common in hip-hop than blending. An abrupt cut on a phrase boundary, landing exactly at the start of the next track, sounds intentional and rhythmically precise. A sloppy blend with two sets of vocals fighting each other sounds like a mistake. When in doubt, cut cleanly.

Mixing across genres
Crossing genre boundaries mid-set requires a bridge: a track that works in both contexts. A deep house track at 124 BPM can bridge into minimal techno at 130 BPM because the tempo difference is manageable and the energy profiles overlap. A techno track at 140 BPM cannot bridge directly into drum and bass at 170 BPM without an obvious tempo jump.

When bridging, the tempo move is the most visible change to an audience. A jump of more than 8 to 10 BPM feels abrupt. Use a transition track that sits in the tempo corridor between the two genres. If no bridge exists, a breakdown or stripped section creates a moment where the tempo reset feels like a deliberate choice rather than an error.
What ties it together
Despite the differences, everything that makes a mix work in one genre makes it work in all of them: phrase awareness, clean beatmatching, deliberate EQ, energy flow, and selection that serves the room. Genre conventions are the variations. The underlying craft is the same.
The fastest way to learn a new genre is to listen to an hour of its best DJs with full attention. Note where transitions happen, how long they last, what structural elements they use, what the energy arc looks like. The ear picks up the patterns before the brain can articulate them. After enough analytical listening, the conventions become intuitive.
