How to use headphones when DJing

Headphones let you hear what the room cannot hear yet. Here is how cue monitoring works and the technique that makes it reliable under pressure.

What headphones are actually for

DJ headphones serve one primary purpose: cue monitoring. You use them to listen to the incoming track (the one that is not yet playing to the room) in your headphones while the current track plays to the room through the main speakers. This lets you beatmatch, set your cue point, and check your key before the transition happens.

They are not for hearing the mix better, monitoring the main output, or listening to music. The headphones are a preparation tool. Once the transition is complete and the new track is playing, the headphones go back to your neck until you need to prepare the next one.

Cueing the next track

To cue a track, press the cue button on the channel you want to listen to. The cue signal sends that channel's audio to the headphone output. You can now hear the incoming track in your headphones. The room hears nothing from that channel yet: the headphone cue is completely separate from the main output.

The headphone mix knob or cue/master blend control determines how much of the cue signal versus the main output you hear in the headphones. Set it fully toward cue while you are matching tempo. Once you are satisfied and ready to transition, some DJs blend the main output back into the headphones to verify alignment against what the room is hearing.

The headphones tell you what is about to happen. The booth monitor tells you what is happening. You need to listen to both.

The technique

The standard technique: put one headphone cup over your ear. The other cup tilts back, away from your head. The ear under the cup hears the cue signal. The uncovered ear hears the room audio directly. You can compare both at once without using the headphone mix control.

This technique is more reliable in a club than split cue or full stereo monitoring because it is not dependent on the headphone mix control being set correctly. The room audio is the room itself, unmediated. When the two beats align in your head (one in each ear), they are aligned in reality.

Split cue

Split cue is a mixer setting that routes the cue signal to the left headphone ear and the main output to the right headphone ear. You hear both tracks simultaneously in your headphones: incoming track in one ear, playing track in the other. This removes the need to tilt a headphone cup off your ear.

Standard cue

Both headphone ears carry the cue signal only. You hear the incoming track in both ears. The main output (what the room hears) is only audible through booth monitors. Requires a booth monitor loud enough to hear clearly.

Best for

Studio or bedroom practice where the monitor is close and clear.

Split cue

Left ear carries the cue signal (incoming track). Right ear carries the main output (what is playing). You hear both tracks simultaneously through the headphones without needing the booth monitor.

Best for

Live club environments where the booth monitor is loud, unreliable, or positioned badly.

One ear off

One headphone cup covers one ear in full. The other is pushed back behind the ear. The uncovered ear hears the room audio directly. This is the classic technique used by most club DJs.

Best for

Any club environment. The most natural and adaptable method.

Not all mixers have a split cue option. Check the mixer settings before assuming it is available in a new booth. If split cue is not available, the one-ear-off technique works in every situation.

One ear or two

Some DJs put both headphone cups over both ears to cue a track, then take the headphones off entirely while the mix is playing. This works technically but it removes your ability to monitor the playing track while the transition is in progress. If the beats drift during a long blend, you cannot hear it until you put the headphones back on.

The one-cup method, where one ear is always uncovered and in contact with room audio, is more reliable for extended blends. You can hear both tracks continuously and catch drift early. The only disadvantage is that it requires learning to listen to two sources simultaneously and extract the relevant information from each.

Common mistakes

Headphone volume too loud

Damages your hearing over time and makes it harder to hear fine timing details. Set the headphone volume just loud enough to hear the kick clearly in a noisy environment.

Never taking the headphones off

DJs who keep headphones on throughout the set are not reading the room. You cannot watch the floor with headphones on both ears.

Cueing without setting a cue point

Searching for the first beat of the incoming track in real time is slow and error-prone. Set cue points on every track before the set.

Relying entirely on headphones without checking the booth monitor

The headphone cue sounds different from the main output. Always verify the blend sounds right through the booth monitor before you commit to the transition.

Using headphones to drown out a difficult room

Blocking your ears with headphones means you cannot read the crowd. If the room is challenging, the answer is better selection, not louder cue monitoring.
