DJ EQ techniques

The EQ is not there to make tracks sound better in isolation. It is there to make two tracks work together in the same space at the same time.

What EQ actually does

EQ cuts or boosts specific frequency ranges. On a DJ mixer, you typically get three: bass, mid, and high. Some mixers add a fourth for low-mid. The knobs at noon are flat: no cut, no boost. Turn left to cut. Turn right to boost.

Most DJs understand this mechanically. What fewer understand is why you would use EQ during a mix. The answer is simple: two full tracks playing simultaneously fight for the same frequencies. EQ carves space so each track is heard without the other masking or clashing with it.

The bass is where this matters most. Two full bass signals running together create a booming, indistinct low end that sounds muddy and can distort at high volume. The solution is a bass swap: one track carries the low end at any given moment. The transition is a transfer of responsibility from one bass to another.

The three bands

Bass20–250 Hz— Kick, sub, bass guitar, low body

When to cut

Cut on the outgoing track as the incoming bass arrives. Never run two full bass signals at once.

When to boost

Rarely boost. If you do, a gentle lift on an anemic track during a long blend.

Watch out for

Muddy low-end is almost always two uncut basses running simultaneously.

Mid250 Hz–4 kHz— Vocals, synths, most melodic content

When to cut

Cut the mids on the outgoing track to let the incoming vocal breathe. Useful in vocal-heavy house.

When to boost

Carefully. Boosted mids honk. Most club systems already emphasise this range.

Watch out for

Both tracks fighting for the same vocal frequency makes the mix sound congested.

High4 kHz–20 kHz— Hi-hats, cymbals, percussion detail, air

When to cut

Cut on the outgoing track's highs to create a gradual fade-out feel without touching the fader.

When to boost

A slight lift adds presence and energy. More useful as a creative tool than as a mixing necessity.

Watch out for

Over-boosted highs cause fatigue fast on a loud system.

These are rough guidelines, not rules. How aggressively you use EQ depends on the material. Two tracks with similar low-end character may need only a gentle bass swap. Two tracks with very different frequency profiles may need significant mid cuts during the blend to prevent congestion.

The bass swap

The bass swap is the most important EQ technique in electronic music DJing. The principle: before you fully bring in track B, cut the bass on track B to zero. Fade in track B with no low end. When track B is audible but track A is still carrying the mix, swap: bring track B's bass up while cutting track A's bass.

Do the bass swap on a phrase boundary, not in the middle of a bar. The swap is a musical event. Treat it like one.

The swap can happen instantly or gradually. An instant swap is cleaner, and it works well when both tracks have similar kick energy. A gradual swap over four or eight bars creates a smoother transition but requires more careful execution to avoid the muddy overlap.

Practice the bass swap in isolation before you try it in a live mix. Load two tracks. Cut the bass on the incoming track to zero. Bring up the fader. Do the swap. Reset. Repeat until the hand movement is automatic and the knob position is always exactly where you intend.

Mids in the mix

The mids carry the most recognisable sonic information: vocals, synth leads, piano, guitar. When two tracks are blended, clashing mids make the mix sound congested and confusing. The fix is usually to reduce the mids on the outgoing track as the incoming track establishes itself.

This is more genre-dependent than the bass swap. In deep house with complex vocal arrangements, pulling the mids on the outgoing track is often essential. In minimal techno, where the mids are thin and percussive, you may not need to touch them at all.

Use your ears rather than a default position. The question is always: can you hear both tracks clearly and distinctly, or are they fighting? If they are fighting, cut one.

High end and air

The high EQ affects hi-hats, cymbals, and the sense of air and brightness in a track. Cutting the highs on the outgoing track as the incoming track arrives creates a natural fade feeling without lowering the fader. It is a useful technique for smooth blends.

Boosting the highs on the incoming track slightly before it arrives can add a sense of presence and excitement, useful in builds or when transitioning into a more energetic track. Do not overdo it. A boost of two or three notches is usually enough. More than that sounds harsh on a loud system.

Filter sweeps

Most DJ mixers include a filter separate from the EQ section. A low-pass filter removes the high frequencies progressively as you turn it down. A high-pass filter removes the low frequencies as you turn it up. Both create dramatic, recognisable effects.

A high-pass sweep on the outgoing track strips away the bass and mids as the incoming track takes over, creating an automatic EQ transition without individual band control. Many DJs use this as a shortcut to the bass swap, particularly in fast-moving sets where precise knob work is difficult.

The downside of heavy filter use is that it becomes a sound signature. Audiences and other DJs recognise the filter sweep sound immediately. Used sparingly, it is effective. Used on every transition, it is a crutch.

Common EQ mistakes

Running two full basses simultaneously

Always cut the bass on the outgoing track before completing the blend.

Never touching the EQ at all

Flat EQ on both tracks during a long blend creates frequency congestion. You need to manage the handoff.

Boosting everything

Boosting adds energy but also adds clutter. Cutting is almost always more effective than boosting during a mix.

Using the filter on every single transition

Vary your technique. The filter sounds distinctive. If every mix sounds the same, the set gets predictable.

Forgetting to reset EQ after the mix

After the outgoing track is gone, reset its EQ to noon. The next time that deck is in use, you do not want unexpected cuts.
